Pennsylvania NHP Climate Change Vulnerability Index

As numerous plant and animal species begin to feel the effects of climate change, how do we determine which species are most vulnerable and need more focused attention sooner rather than later?

The NatureServe Climate Change Vulnerability Index helps scientists, resource managers, and others to quickly identify those plants and animals likely to be particularly vulnerable to these changes. Using readily available information about a species’ natural history, distribution, and landscape circumstances, the Index predicts whether it will likely suffer a range contraction, population reductions, or both during the coming years.

Scientists with the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program are using the Index to screen high-priority animal and plant species, and the results can help guide future state policy and conservation planning.
